I picked up my first camera in '87 around the age of 14. I was able to choose an elective class in Jr. High, and photography always seemed so cool. I spent a lot of that semester either with my hands in a black bag (spooling film); or in the back room, inhaling tray after tray chemicals developing images.
Things have gotten a lot simpler in some ways since then. I certainly don't have to spend time spooling film anymore. These days I am able to focus entirely on my subjects in order to get them to come to life right off the page - or in this case, the screen.
I became a "professional" photographer around 2005, starting with head shots and family portraits. Eventually this lead to shooting at corporate events, seminars, social engagements and even food photos. Although there isn't much financial incentive, I love concert photograhy. The combination of the two artforms can create something where the sum is definitely more than the combination of the parts.
Getting personalities to emerge is my goal at any engagement. It doesn't matter if I am shooting people or animals or skylines. My style is more of a photojournalistic one. I try as much as possible not to disrupt my subjects. Thier true selves are almost always far more interesting.
I've had my work published in both print and online forms. Most recently in Relix and Edible magazines. I have also had images used as both covers and indside jacket artwork for Yonder Mountain String Band and The String Cheese Incident.
Currently, I work freelance out of the San Francisco/Oakland area. Please contact me if you would like to discuss a project.Â
